The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally shifted the meaning of ‘normal’, disrupting lives, work and communities. And with it, the role of government.
A recent citizen survey conducted by PwC Australia’s Centre for Citizen Research indicates that COVID-19 and the bushfires of early 2020 altered the nature of the relationship between governments and citizens. Nearly four in ten Australians are stressed about their financial stability and job security, but overall there is increased confidence that the economy will bounce back quickly. Indeed, trust in government has risen significantly over the last few years from 18 percent in 2018 to 45 percent in June 2020 and 46 percent in October 2020.
So, how does the government continue to build trust and maintain momentum during pandemic recovery? What will shape the government of the future in Australia? It all lies in responsiveness and keeping citizens at the core of every decision. A responsive government builds trust through personalising citizen experiences and consistently makes rapid, cost-effective decisions in times of uncertainty and creates a platform for growth and recovery.
